Phoenix Aviation Acquires Ramair Inc.

On November 3, 2000, new owner Charles M. Schaefer received the keys from Richard Mattheisz, owner of Ramair, Inc. for 18 years, closing one chapter in local aviation history while opening another. The merged company will operate as Phoenix Aviation Incorporated. The sale was prompted by the pending closure of Baltimore Airpark, Phoenix's former baseanother casualty of the development pressures facing general aviation airports across the country.

Five of Schaefer's airplanes joined the existing fleet at Martin State, including a Citabria 115 and a Beechcraft Bonanza. The addition of these unique aircraft makes Phoenix one of the few to offer aerobatics, tailwheel, and high performance instruction.

A Cessna 150, a 172, and a 177 Cardinal also joined the Echo and Sierra lines, significantly expanding the availability of traditional rental and training aircraft. Phoenix's instructors also made the move to MTN, bringing with them an equally distinctive set of ratings. With the merger, Phoenix becomes the largest operation of its kind in Maryland. Shaefer is committed to maintaining the friendly, professional, customer-centered approach that distinguished Ramair under Rich's leadership.

But  bigger won't mean impersonal according to Charles. Despite the November temperatures, he's already planning afternoon barbecues, an expanded lounge, and regular social events for pilots, their families, and friends to get together and have some fun on the ground as well as in the air. One popular innovation: a twin-engine, restaurant-style coffee maker. Rumor has it an FAA-mandated AD required Phoenix to add a new item to the pilot shop inventory: gel-pack Travel Johns.

Rich plans to retire and one of these days, hopes to spend more time in the air with his Beechcraft Debonaire. But for now, he's still behind the counter almost every day helping Charlie takoff and, of course, providing the same great service that pilots up and down the Chesapeake Bay region have enjoyed for two decades.
