Instruction (Getting Your Certification)
Solo Flight
After your first lesson, it might seem like solo flying is out of your reach,
but you'll do it, just like hundreds of other people do every year. Sure,
it'll take time, commitment, and hard work...a good 20-30 hours for both you
and your instructor to feel comfortable enough to take the plane up alone for
the first time. (After all, without your CFI, there's no one to go over
procedures with you, to make suggestions, to keep an eye on altitude and
airspeed, or to take the controls if things get rough.)
In solo flight, you'll do most of the things you did in
basic dual instruction: takeoffs, landings, flying the traffic pattern, and maneuvers in the familiar practice areas over the Eastern
Shore. The only difference is you'll be doing it, well, solo! And one word
of advice: wear an old shirt the day you think you're going to be
soloing.
