Instruction (Student Pilot Certificate/Medical Certificate)
You'll need to obtain a Student Pilot Certificate before you solo.
Requirements:
Be at least 16 years old.
Hold at least a third-class medical certificate
Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the
English language
To get your Student Pilot Certificate, you will typically make an
appointment with a local Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) who will give
you a basic physical examination, and, if no conditions are identified that
will interfere with your ability to safely pilot an aircraft, will be issue you
a combination Student Pilot Certificate/Medical Certificate. Your instructor can
help you locate an AME near you, or you can search the online directory of AMEs.
There are three types of medical certificates: third class for private
pilots, second class for commercial pilots, and first class for airline
transport pilots. You'll want to think about your long-term aviation goals and
discuss them with the AME; even though it's going to be a while before you're
"flying for hire" it's wise to determine if you'll meet the medical requirements
before investing in the necessary flight training.
