Now that he's a "Double I," Walt, a 2000+ hour pilot, can also instruct students pursuing their instrument rating. January 27, 2002: Remy Blanchaert earned his commercial pilot certificate, passing his checkride with Michael DeRuggiero in N22PH. Cathy Steele has served as Remy's instructor since his private pilot training which he completed in April 2000. What's next, Remy? CFI? December 27, 2001: Randy Crowther passed his commercial checkride with Annabelle Fera. A student of Cathy Steele, Randy earned his private pilot certificate in August 2000 and instrument rating in June 2001; next step is the CFI. December 6, 2001: Ben Eaten, a student of Navid Shahraki, passed his private pilot checkride with Michael DeRuggiero. Congratulations, Ben! Coincidentally, the FAA waiver that allows private pilots to once again fly VFR out of MTN was dated this day, as well. Good news twice! November 26, 2001: Dave Weaver passed his private pilot checkride with Ed Cresap after soloing just 13 days previously on November 13. Awesome! November 13, 2001: David Weaver soloed today in one of Phoenix's newest fleet additions, N52407; his instructor was Andy Grieb. Congratulations, Dave! November 8, 2001: Jack Etheridge soloed in the Sundowner (N38058) today. Tom Anglin, his instructor, was no doubt quite proud of his accomplishment. November 6, 2001: Walt Coats watched another solo student take off in N1977E. Congratulations go out to Dale Roger on this milestone accomplishment. October 22, 2001: Chip Routt passed his commercial checkride with Annabelle Fera. Chip, a student of Adrian Griner, now has that enviable "license to earn" (vs. the PPL "license to learn). Good job, Chip! October 14, 2001: Clem Miller, a student of Frank Bober, soloed N30889, Phoenix's Cardinal. Clem is seeking to diversify his existing helicopter flying skills with a fixed-wing rating. 0ctober 12, 2001: Craig Orem performed his first solo in N94658 at Carroll County's Jack B. Poage Airport under the watchful eyes of his instructor, Adrian Griner. Sure beats the watchful eyes surveying the Enhanced Class B airspace currently enveloping Martin State. October 2, 2001: Sheila Croft, a student of Cathy Steele, passed her checkride with Michael DeRuggiero with flying colors and (finally) blue skies. Excellent job, Sheila! Let's hope the temporary VFR restrictions out of Martin are lifted soon so she can exercise her new PP-SEL privileges before her BFR's due. (See the News and Views archives for more about Sheila's dream of aviation, now realized.) A memorable positive exchange of flight controls during the hoodwork went: "Michael, you have the airplane. Michael, I have the airplane. Michael, you have the airplane." (Word has it that Steve's accomplishment would have been sooner, but his first checkride was postponed after a doorknob broke off the hanger, stranding Michael and him outside for two hours one balmy February morning. November 25, 2000: Remy Blanchaert made the news again, this time passing his instrument rating checkride with Michael DeRuggiero. He and his instructor, Cathy Steele, must have been working pretty intensively, considering he just got his private pilot certificate (and new Cessna) in April. Congratulations! November 19, 2000, Michael Bachman soloed under the watchful eyes of his instructor Cathy Steele. His first solo communication on 121.8 after silence on 124.925: "Where's the ATIS?" (No, the guys in the tower weren't playing a trick on him...just updating the broadcast). On October 20, 2000, Jennifer Kerstetter took N94658 on a solo mission, no doubt waving as she overflew the Air National Guard C130s. Way to go, Jennifer! Nice to be a pilot in command for a change. October 15, 2000: Bill Garvin successfully passed his private pilot check ride with Michael DeRuggiero on 15 October. The "wall of honor" at Phoenix Aviation continues to reach new heights. August 17, 2000: Randy Crowther passed his private pilot's checkride.  Way to go Randy!!!  Also in August 2000, Walter Coats Jr. earned his CFI rating.  Congratulations on this difficult rating. She resisted the urge to jump and did a great job. June 7, 2000: Dave Roesler (famous from the Gallery pages) made his first solo flight early in the morning. Way to go Dave! April 2000: Remy Blanchaert earned his private pilot's certification. Plus, he purchased a brand new Cessna 172 in March. Do you think owning the Cessna prior to the checkride was a motivational factor in doing a great job on the checkride?
